you just can't quit me, zain. >> kate. that's why. so what. >> is likely to be the impact, do you think? even considering an exemption is enough in this environment? >> well, in this environment, with all this uncertainty, any sliver of good news is great news. i mean, this exemption, temporary exemption is a welcome relief to car manufacturers. if you look at where the big three closed just in terms of their stock price, if you could pull it up. or closing 3 to 4 to 5% higher. everybody is sort of excited about this news. and that is because these tariffs kate, would be devastating for car manufacturers. nobody builds a car 100% in america. we're talking about really complicated supply chains. so for example some car manufacturers might import parts from mexico, from canada, from other parts of the world. they will cross the border several times before being finally assembled in the united states. and so if the transmission, let's say, gets built in canada, and then the car crosses the border through mexico where the wiring is instal

kate. later on on sunday, police then received a call from an ex-lover of this man, bomber, saying that he was the one who came in there and lit fire to the governor's mansion. and then shortly after that bomber actually showed up at the pennsylvania state police headquarters. it's a massive building not too far from where we are, and turned himself in at that point. police say that he confessed to all of it, including and perhaps the most chilling part of these court documents and the testimony that he gave to police in this interrogation, was that if he had found governor shapiro, bomber would have, quote, beaten him with his hammer. take a listen to how governor shapiro was processing everything that happened just yesterday at a press conference. >> this kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society, and i don't give a if it's coming from one particular side or the other. directed at one particular party or another, or one particular person or another. it is not okay. >> and

kate. >> thank you so much, sara.s morning, some surprising news out of the fda now delaying the decision to grant full approval of novavax's covid 19 vaccine, even though it was on track to be cleared. a source telling cnn that the agency is now seeking more data on the vaccine. and the move is noteworthy because for many reasons, including because it comes just days after the fda's top vaccine official was forced out of the job. that official, in his resignation letter, also slammed hhs secretary rfk jr.. accusing him of pushing, quote, misinformation and lies. also this morning, we're learning some more detail about the massive layoffs and cuts that have come to hhs, to the entire department. you see some of the numbers there of how many employees have been let go there. with that, questions are growing about what the cuts now mean for critical safety and regulation around new drugs and food. congress now wants kennedy to testify about the cuts next week, as some of the fired hhs employees are now speaking out. >>

>> kate? >> well. >> public health experts are watching this closely, and we know of two vaccines from moderna that are awaiting fda action. one of those vaccines is moderna's next generation covid 19 vaccine. we hear from the company that the fda is expected to make a decision on that vaccine by may 31st. moderna's other vaccine is its combination flu and covid shots. so, as you know, kate, we typically have to get a separate covid shot and a separate flu shot. but this is a vaccine that combines protection against both covid and flu in a single jab. moderna already applied for fda approval of this vaccine. we're not quite sure when the agency may make a decision on that particular vaccine, but if approved, this would be the first ever combination flu and covid shot here in the united states. now, the reason why public health experts are watching both of these vaccines closely is because just last week, novavax applied for full approval of its covid 19 vaccine. the fda delayed action on that.

i'm john berman with kate bolduan. this is cnn news center. >> john frame, the important question of the day. what happens next? well, here's what's already happening this morning. the new 84% tariff that china slapped on the united states that's taking effect. and for the first time, beijing is responding to the 125% tariff that president trump is now hitting them with. saying this, the door to talks is open, but dialog must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and equality. and another major development this morning, the european union announcing it will put its own tariffs against the united states on hold after the president backed off and announced that 90 day pause on tariffs for essentially the targeted tariffs on everyone except for china. the e.u. saying that the pause is a time to give negotiations a chance. trump's reversal led to an historic surge on wall street yesterday. u.s. markets though, right now. let's take a look. i'm going to go this direction. they are not in surge territory, if you will.

kate?xually assaulting a teenager. can n you explain more about th? why was he not stopped for that sooner? >> reporter: that is one of the main questions that the family is trying to gain answers to themselves, kate. we do know that there were two prior allegations of sexual assault against this suspect. one in 2022. another in 2024. we have looked into as far as the timeline of those allegations. despite the investigations happening when they were initially reported, kate, the filing for those charges did not take place until after this 13-year-old had disappeared and prior to his body being found. important note here that when the official murder charge was filed earlier this week, it was later amended to include one of the sexual assault charges dating back to 2022. so a bit of a confusing timeline here, but that point that he had prior allegations against him is one that the family is still pressing for. >> and just to be clear, the suspect is still in custody at the moment? >> reporte

i'm kate bolduan in for erin burnett. outfront tonight, the breaking news donald trump is lashing out at judges. all of this after one federal judge is now threatening to hold trump's administration in contempt for defying his orders. those orders were to turn back planes of migrants destined for a prison in el salvador. the planes never returned, and judge james boasberg, now writing the court does not reach such conclusion lightly or hastily. indeed, it has given defendants ample opportunity to rectify or explain their actions. none of their responses has been satisfactory. judge boasberg, in his 46 page opinion, did say he would give the administration one week to purge itself of contempt, writing this the most obvious way for defendants to do so here is by asserting custody of the individuals who were removed, in violation. and donald trump writing this what is going on with our courts? they are totally out of control. they seem to hate trump so much that anything goes. so it was just 24 hours ago that another judge a
